Purpose
Small lake systems are a critical part of regional hydrology and ecology throughout Canada, and are easily influenced by various physical processes. As the effects of climate change continue to threaten inland water ecosystems, small lakes provide an invaluable opportunity for environmental monitoring. This dataset includes high resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery, as well as some biogeochemical water property data for Sunfish Lake, a small lake in Waterloo (ON). This data set will also support the project titled "Transformative sensor Technologies and Smart Watersheds (TTWS): Work Package 2". TTWS is a Pillar 3 project under the Global Water Futures Program funded by Canada First Research Excellence Fund.
Abstract
This dataset includes high resolution images collected with the eBee Plus RTK UAV using several sensors. The RGB sensor used is the senseFly SODA, multispectral is the Parrot Sequoia (green, red, red edge, near-infrared, and RGB) and the thermal is the senseFly thermoMAP (7.5-13.5µm). The UAV was flown at 75m above ground level, at various times throughout the day. Data was processed using Pix4D software.
Temperature data has been collected hourly from three buoys in Sunfish Lake. This was collected with HOBO TidBit sensors, which were deployed from the buoys at depth intervals from the surface to the maximum depth of 20 meters. Water quality data was also collected at ~10 day intervals during the open water season using an YSI sonde. The parameters collected include temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, and pressure. Turbidity was also measured at the same time using a Secchi Disk.
