Abstract
Benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) communities were sampled at locations upstream and downstream of the E.B. Campbell Dam. BMI were sampled using a modified kick method for large rivers (protocols of Saskatchewan Northern Great Plains Ecosystem Health Assessment Manual (Ministry of Environment (MoE) & Saskatchewan Watershed Authority (SWA)). Samples were collected using a time-limited kick method with a D-net (500 um mesh) along three transects from the shoreline to a wadeable depth (one minute per transect). Samples were processed and identified to genus or species, as practical.
Purpose
Data are used for IMPC Theme B: Water Management Modelling, Coupling Human-driven and Natural Systems. The data contribute to IMPC subtheme B2: Developing a performance model for aquatic ecosystems based on hydro-ecologic metrics and environmental demands.
Plain Language Summary
Samples of benthic invertebrates were collected from river sites upstream and downstream of a dam that affects river flow and water level through hydropeaking (short-term variation in power production). The abundance, number of taxa, and tolerance levels of the invertebrates were assessed across different seasons to test whether there was a seasonality to hydropeaking impacts.
