Abstract
These data were collected with the goal to characterize the variation and vertical structure in ground ice content of the near-surface permafrost in the two dominant permafrost-affected forest types in the Great Slave Lowlands. To acquire quantitative and qualitative measures of ground ice content, boreholes were cored using a CRREL (Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory) drill with a 7.6 cm diameter core barrel in the summers of 2014 and 2015. Boreholes were drilled up to 60 or 100 cm below the permafrost table, and core samples were taken in 10 cm intervals. In addition to ice contents, samples were retained to determine organic and inorganic carbon content, sediment grain size, and a salinity/metals analysis package (performed by Exova Inc., Edmonton, AB). To address the influence of forest characteristics on near-surface ground ice content, tree surveys and canopy cover estimates were performed at each site, and 1 m2 quadrat ground vegetation surveys were performed adjacent to each borehole. Data will also be available in a Northwest Territories Geological Survey open file report.
Purpose
The purpose of this project was to characterize the variation and vertical structure in ground ice content of the near-surface permafrost in the two dominant permafrost-affected forest types in the Great Slave Lowlands, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
