Abstract
Soils play an important role in controlling both the hydrologic and biochemical interaction between the land surface and the underlying groundwater system. A dynamic synergy exists between how soil processes influence groundwater quantity and quality and how the nature of groundwater flow influences soil water content and composition, and surface water ecology. The soil zone functions as both a reactive filter for infiltrating water and a region of infiltration above the water table facilitating the replenishment of groundwater resources. Rapid anthropogenic development combined with the uncertainties of a warming climate are leading to observable depletion of the groundwater resource, along with poorly understood, yet potentially significant changes in the complex interaction between soils and groundwater
