IP3, "Improved Processes and Parameterisation for Prediction in Cold Regions," is a Canada-wide research network devoted to an improved understanding of surface water and weather systems in cold regions, particularly Canada's Rocky Mountains and western Arctic. IP3 is making contributions to better weather and climate prediction, to estimation of streamflow from ungauged basins, to sustainable management of mountain and northern water resources, to calculating freshwater inputs to the Arctic Ocean, and to predicting changes in Rocky Mountain snow and water supplies. These issues are of key importance to agriculture and urban and industrial development in the Prairies and northwest.

IP3 is developing an improved understanding of cold regions hydrometeorology and advancing atmospheric and hydrological predictive models. IP3 scientists conduct field work along a transect of high latitude and high altitude instrumented research sites that characterize the cold regions of Canada. IP3 is a component of the International Polar Year (IPY), the International Decade for Prediction in Ungauged Basins (PUB), and the Climate and Cryosphere project (CliC) of the World Climate Research Programme. IP3 has been recognized as an Affiliate of the ACQWA (Assessing Climate impacts on the Quantity and quality of WAter) Project in Europe.
