IP3 and WC2N Outreach Activities
The IP3 and WC2N Networks want to share our science with others!
If your school or community group would like one of our Network members to speak about our work in cold regions hydrology, water resources, climate, or glaciology, please contact our Outreach Coordinator, Nadine Kapphahn.

Outreach Activities
- February 2010 - IP3 and WC2N (Western Canadian Cryospheric Network) members participated in a workshop on "Glaciers in the Columbia Basin - Glacial Recession Research" in Golden, BC, on 1 February. There was a full evening of presentations for the public on Our Glaciers. Our Legacy at the Golden Civic Centre. A detailed Agenda for the evening public presentations is available HERE. John Pomeroy provided a public presentation on Water in the Columbia, Effects of Climate Change, and Glacial Recession.
- January 2010 - John Pomeroy attended a meeting in Kelowna, BC, on 20 January on using the IP3 model CRHM to predict the effects of forest cover change on water supply in the Okanagan region.
- January-May 2010 - IP3, along with WC2N and many Bow Valley partners in Alberta, is sponsoring a Snow and Ice Speaker Series in Canmore, Alberta, January-May 2010! We will have seven speakers provide presentations on snow and ice research in Canada, Europe, and the United States. Video and audio files of presentations will be made available on-line following each event. The links are listed below:
- 26 January 2010 - Dr. John Pomeroy: Canadian Rockies Snow and Ice Initiative: Creating a "Canadian Davos" in the Bow Valley (QuickTime .mov file, 204 MB).
- 10 Febrary 2010 - Dr. Juan Ignacio Lopez-Moreno: Environmental change and water resources in the Pyrenees: Facts and future perspectives for Mediterranean Mountains (QuickTime .mov file, 217 MB).
- 3 March 2010 - Dr. Gwenn Flowers: Water under glaciers: Why some glaciers flow fast and what this means for their survival (QuickTime .mov file, 124 MB).
- 3 March 2010 - A video of Robert Sandford's presentation Corralling the Water Hole: Avoiding Dispute and Potential Conflict Over Water in the Canadian West is also available (QuickTime .mov file, 47 MB)
- An audio PodCast of Bob's presentation has been included in the Friends of Banff National Park Radio's weekly program "Affecting You" (Bob's presentation begins near the 18 minute mark).
- 24 March 2010 - Dr. Matthias Bernhardt and Dr. Danny Marks: Research on Snow and Glaciers in the European Alps and The Impact of Climate Warming on Snow, Climate, and Streamflow in a North American Mountain Basin (QuickTime .mov file, 311 MB)
- 7 April 2010 - Dr. Tobias Jonas: Research, monitoring, and warning services related to snow and avalanches in Switzerland (QuickTime .mov file, 178 MB)
- The Bow Valley's Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper has carried articles written by Lynn Martel on each of the speakers:
- January 2010 - IP3 scientists teach a CRHM Training Course and lead a Water Management Workshop in Red Deer, Alberta on 12-13 January (see further information on the Workshops page).
- October 2009 - IP3 scientists met with Alberta hydrologists in Edmonton to discuss data availability issues as well as application of the MESH model to hydrological prediction in Alberta.
- August 2009 - Kathy Young, Geography Professor at York University and a scientist with the IP3 and IPY projects, led 69 Arctic hydrologists, oceanographers, and others on a floating expedition to Baffin Island for the 17th International Northern Research Basins (NRB) Symposium and Workshop. IP3 scientists and students attended the Symposium, and the IP3 and WC2N Networks supported outreach activities in several ports-of-call during the cruise. York University has written three articles on the cruise: YFile - 5 August 2009, YFile - 26 August 2009, and YFile - 27 August 2009. Additionally, the NRB organizing committee has posted on-line minutes and reports from the meeting as well as professional photos documenting the symposium.
- June 2009 - IP3 scientists met with Manitoba Water Stewardship and Parks Canada in Winnipeg to discuss application of CRHM to hydrological prediction in ungauged or incompletely gauged watersheds.
