DRI Legacy

DRI endeavoured to provide tangible outcomes of its 5 year research effort to the broader scientific community and general public. This intention was addressed through focusing on several intiatives during the wind down of the network.

These efforts are listed below:

  • Abstract
  • The second generation prairie agrometeorological model (PAMII) simulates the evolution of soil moisture content and vegetation using a daily time step. Unlike other models which are commonly used to model ET on the Canadian prairies, PAMII model does not explicitly take into account the surface energy balance. Evapotranspiration in PAMII is governed by photoperiod, vapour density gradient, fractional leaf area, aerodynamic resistance and canopy resistance (rs). The magnitude of rs is inversely proportional to the relative plant available water present in the root zone, and the fractional leaf area. Input data for the model consist of observed daily precipitation and minimum and maximum temperatures. PAMII also requires a profile of temperature, humidity and winds in the PBL. This input was obtained from the 0-hour prognostic soundings from the daily 1200 UTC and 0000 UTC model runs of the regional version of the Canadian Global Environmental Multi-scale (GEM) model. This dataset was the result of PAMII being run on stations across the prairies specifically to simulate soil moisture conditions from 1998-2005. Simulated variables available include: soil moisture (mm and % plant available) for the root zone and top 10cm, day time evapotranspiration (mm), 24-hr precipitation (mm) and relative humidity (%). Prairie wide interpolated maps of plant available root zone soil moisture (%) were also generated from this data.
