DRI Legacy

DRI endeavoured to provide tangible outcomes of its 5 year research effort to the broader scientific community and general public. This intention was addressed through focusing on several intiatives during the wind down of the network.

These efforts are listed below:

  • Abstract
  • This dataset comprises modelling output of the Cold Regions Hydrological Model CRHM) that was run to simulate and generate maps of water inputs to streams and sloughs across the prairies. Due to the high data demands of the model, and lack of suitable data on the prairies, the hourly meteorological observations for a variety of locations across western Canada from January 1, 1960 to May 20, 2006 were used. The station locations are: Brandon, Calgary, Cold Lake, Edmonton, Edmonton, Estevan, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Red Deer, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Winnipeg and Yorkton. This forcing data can be found in Hourly Prairie Meteorological Station Observations (1960-2006) also in the DRI Data Legacy. At each of these stations the meteorological data were used as the forcing to run CRHM on a typical prairie basin. These basin outputs were further simplified and standardized across the region by calculating an exceedance fraction. The exceedance fraction is the probability of a certain observed event (simplified 0 = below normal, 0.5 = normal and 1 = above normal). These results were then interpolated to produce standardized surfaces of annual water discharges into sloughs and streams across the region. The purpose was to gain an understanding of the hydrologic sensitivities of changes in meteorological forcings across the Canadian Prairies particularly in drought conditions.
