  • Abstract
  • The SABAE-HW code package is intended for simulating the vertical transfer of energy and water between the atmosphere and the land surface. Most of the land surface physics follow the modeling framework of the Canadian Land Surface Scheme (CLASS). If anyone is interested in using this model and or wants access to the source code please contact the owner. Some essential attracting features of SABAE-HW model are: A comprehensive land surface scheme also fitted to cold hydrology. A detailed soil model for weather forced heat and water transfers. Flexible in site modeling thanks to the user's specified depth and soil layers. Accurate for temperature and liquid and frozen moistures solution profiles. Coupled with the saturated zone through the optional choice of a water table boundary condition. Efficient in computational time as supported by a compact implenentation of the powerful GMRES solver. Convenient for teaching, research and consultancy in many soil related topics such as agriculture, forecasting, groundwater modeling, thermal energy, construction, climate change, etc. Portable as a light package over different platforms (Windows, Linux and Unix). User-friendly thanks to the variables' short definitions embedded in input and output files. Applications include: Modeling and simulation of heat and water transfers in soil columns. Assessment of the recharge to the groundwater table. Assessment of the actual large scale evaporation. Computer aided soil moisture and temperature forecasts for crops' planting management. Determination of the Antecedent Precipitation Index (API) for surface runoff and flood forecasts. Estimation of the soil strength and risk of terrain and river bank sliding. Investigation of the climate change impact on soil moisture and its implications on agriculture and infrastructure. The meteorological forcing inputs required by SABAE-HW are the incoming long wave and short wave solar radiations, precipitation, wind speed, air temperature, atmospheric pressure and relative or specific humidity. The model also needs some simulation parameters and initializations of a number of prognostic variables, soil characteristics and vegetation parameters. The output from SABAE-HW includes the surface, canopy and snow temperatures; soil layers temperatures and liquid and frozen water contents; surface heat fluxes, net absorbed short and long wave radiations, and sensible and latent heat fluxes;water evaporation, water over canopy, pond and bottom drainage; snow accumulation and snow melt.
